Museum of Modern Arts Odisha from sanat rath on Vimeo.
OBJECTIVE: To design a Museum of Modern arts of Global prominence, thereby bringing the Indian Subcontinent under a new cultural influence.
CONCEPT: The Sun Temple at Konark, the secular icon of Odisha, was the inspiration behind the design. Three wheels of the chariot intersecting at the centroid forming the pious “trichakrika” inspires the circulation pattern while the circumscribing wheel with its spokes define the galleries.
PROCESS: The design process aimed at planning the spaces in multiple dimension while tailoring the museum experience for each group of users.
1. Spatial Analysis and User Models: The user patterns were studied in great detail with help of personas to conceive an apt visual language strategy.
2. Coverage and built-up: With areas allotted, several block models were made to find a suitable layout for the building keeping visual, climatic and circulation concerns in mind.
3. Digitization: The design was detailed on the computer and made viable with advanced structural and BIM software.
4. Iterations: Design iterations were made as per suggestions from experts. Multipurpose roof form was created with help of generative modeling.
Final design was rendered in form of a walkthrough.
FINAL OUTCOME: The project, termed as 'brilliant' by the evaluation panel, resulted in a piece of intelligent architecture with an innovative circulation pattern,an interactive wayfinding scheme, a well defined structural system, an aesthetic roof form and most of all, a connection with the users. I was awarded an A grade, the highest across the whole batch.
